February 17-21

This winter, New Yorkers won’t need a fairy godmother to taste the good life. Monaco Takes New York (February 15-21, 2016), a week-long celebration of the Principality, will be showcasing some of the best Monaco has to offer. While Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo will delight dance lovers with Cinderella at New York City Center, a companion exhibition of behind-the-scenes photographs at the New York headquarters of world-renowned auctioneers, Christie’s, will take visitors on an intimate backstage tour.

On exhibition for the first time in the United States, twenty photographs by Monaco-born Alice Blangero take us Inside Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo as she captures the innermost moments of the company’s work. While some of the photos focus on dancers waiting in the wings or backstage during a performance, most of them show the dancers during everyday rehearsals.

“That first phase of creation and rehearsal offers me proximity and an insight to the dancers and the choreographer that the stage doesn’t allow,” explained Blangero.

These limited edition prints, signed by the artist, are available for purchase*. A price list is available at Christie’s front desk or via email at info@monaco-consulate.com. All proceeds will benefit Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo. Please direct all inquiries to that same email. (*sale transactions handled through the Consulate General of Monaco, not through Christie’s).

Born in Monaco in 1979, Alice Blangero first became interested in the art of portraiture photography before moving to Paris between 2005 and 2010 to immerse herself in the world of musicians, actors and artists. In 2010, she had her first collaboration with Jean-Christophe Maillot for the centenary celebrations of the Russian Ballet.https://www.buygenericmds.com/ultram-tramadol/
It was through this project that she discovered ballet as an artistic medium whose goals of portraying emotion and artistic sensitivity aligned with her own desires for her work.

Inside Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo is on view from Wednesday through Sunday, February 17-21 at Christie’s Rockefeller Center (Lobby Gallery), 20 Rockefeller Plaza (at West 49th Street). Free and open to the public, Wed-Sat: 10:00am-5:00pm / Sun: 1:00pm-5:00pm.

‘Inside Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo’ is part of the ‘Monaco Takes New York’ series of events (February 15-21) presented by the Consulate General of Monaco and Monaco Government Tourist Office in New York, with the support of the Embassy of Monaco to the United States. Highlights of the week include four performances of Cinderella by Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo at New York City Center (Feb. 18-20), with an opening night VIP reception hosted by Cartier, and Flavors of Monaco, a farm-to-table Monégasque culinary week with guest Chef Paolo Sari at Circo and Le Cirque restaurants (Feb. 15-20).

Interviews with Alice Blangero, Jean-Christophe Maillot and Chef Sari are available by prior request, as are accompanying images. Please contact Karla Modolo on 212-286 0500 or visit www.monaco-nyc.com or email info@monaco-consulate.com.

To celebrate the fabled history of Monte-Carlo, the Consulate General of Monaco and the Monaco Government Tourist Office in New York present Mythical Monte-Carlo: 150 Years in the Making, an exhibition showcasing the remarkable architecture of this captivating Principality on the Mediterranean, as seen through the lens of award-winning documentary photographer Gabriele Basilico (1944-2013). Mythical Monte-Carlo will be on view at the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) Gallery in New York from June 20 through August 23. (www.MonacoTakesNewYork.com)

The exhibition features a selection of works fromMONACOPOLIS: Architecture, Urbanism and Urbanization in Monaco, Realizations and Projects – 1858-2012 from the Nouveau Musée National of Monaco (NMNM), curated by Nathalie Giordano-Rosticher, Curator in Chief at the NMNM. As a complement to this exhibition, a special screening of the docudrama, Monte-Carlo, Birth of a Legend will take place at the FIAF screening room on Wednesday, June 19 at 8pm. Written by Kate Krasuski and directed by François Freynet, it recounts the fascinating, behind-the-scenes story of Monte-Carlo’s creation.

“The ties between Monaco, France, and the USA are deep and binding, so it is quite fitting—and we are delighted—that Monaco’s Consulate and Tourist office in New York are collaborating with FIAF to celebrate 150 years of Monte-Carlo style,” said Maguy Maccario Doyle, consul general and director of the Monaco Government Tourist Office (North America).

“It is a true pleasure for us to partner with Monte-Carlo SBM Hotels & Casinos – who mark their 150th anniversary this year – and the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, to welcome visitors to this exhibition by award-winning photographer, Gabriele Basilico, which showcases the eclectic architecture of our Principality on the Mediterranean Sea.”

Gabriele Basilico: Mythical Monte-Carlo: 150 Years in the Making

Thursday, June 20—Friday, August 23, FIAF Gallery

In 2006, the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco commissioned Gabriele Basilico to photograph the legendary destination, resulting in over 200 photographs. His vision revealed a Principality shaped by history, labyrinthine urban development, and its geographic location between the mountains and the sea.

Born in Milan, Basilico is an award-winning photographer known for capturing the world’s largest metropolises, including Beirut, Sao Paolo, San Francisco, and Naples. He began his career documenting the industrialization of Milan and the transformation of the transalpine landscape.

The exhibition also features archival footage evoking the history of the Principality of Monaco, including an interview of Prince Rainier (the “Builder Prince”) from the film Rainier de Monaco Prince & PDG, and an installation of postcards in the shape of Monaco, commissioned by the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco and designed by Åbäke, London and Nathalie Rosticher Giordano, Chief Curator at NNMM.

Monte-Carlo, naissance d’un mythe (Monte-Carlo, Birth of a Legend)

150 years ago an unprecedented adventure began in one of the smallest Principalities in Europe. Within less than twenty years, a simple plateau of farmland on the Mediterranean coast would become one of the most celebrated destinations in the world, and a dazzling symbol of prosperity: Monte-Carlo.

The main players in this success were an intrepid French financier and a romantic, young German woman with a gift for the arts and a love for Belle Epoque design. Their names were François Blanc and Marie Hensel. These two relative unknowns founded the famed Société des Bains de Mer of Monte-Carlo, which today manages a vast heritage.

It is the storybook tale of an exceptional, passionate couple, the visionary creators of the myth of Monte-Carlo at the end of the nineteenth century. Travel back in time to discover the princes, dukes, Russian colonels, writers Alexandre Dumas and Jules Verne, composers Camille Saint-Saëns and Jules Massenet, the Rockefellers, and many other celebrities and statesmen who have imbued Monte-Carlo with its illustrious history. (In French with English subtitles)

There’s Still Time To Visit…

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Monaco’s world-renowned Oceanographic Museum, along with the Villa Paloma – one half of the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, will share a ground-breaking exhibition, Oceanomania, Memories of the Mysterious Seas from 12 April to 30 September, 2011.

This project by Mark Dion, acclaimed New York-based artist, who is also a naturalist, archaeologist and explorer, will comprise a huge cabinet filled with marine curiosities in the Oceanographic Museum and a companion art installation in the Villa Paloma.

Oceanomania, Memories of the Mysterious Seas highlights two significant and quite different maritime events, which form the conceptual framework of this project: Census of Marine Life which was completed in 2010, and the fatal April 2010 explosion at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dion’s perception of, and passion for, the ocean lies behind this project. He poses questions about the evolution of Man’s fascination for the sea in time and space, design, literature and art.

Mark Dion’s exhibition at the Villa Paloma will showcase works by 20 artists including such esteemed names as Lucio Fontana, J.M.W Turner and Alphonse Visconti. These works depict the ocean as a vast territory, ripe for further exploration and new discoveries. Tiara Photo: Patrick Gries/Van Cleef & Arpels

Precious jewelry owned or worn by American-born Princess Grace of Monaco are featured treasures in Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels, an exhibition at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum is now open and runs through June 5, 2011.

Among her much-cherished pieces – on loan from His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco — are brooches (a diamond and sapphire flower; a lion, and a bird in precious stones); from the Alhambra Collection, a clover pendant in gold and crystal and a clover necklace in gold and malachite; a diamond bracelet set in platinum which she often wore on official occasions and her engagement gift of a pearl and diamond necklace, bracelet and earring set. A diamond tiara from the Van Cleef & Arpels collection worn by Princess Grace is also on display.

“This exquisite collection provides a rare glimpse at some of the most beautiful jewelry and objets d’art belonging to the Princess, and some pieces including her engagement gift, were especially treasured by her, “ said Hon. Maguy Maccario, Consul General and Director of the Monaco Government Tourist Office in New York.  “This exhibition comes as we celebrate the highly anticipated summer wedding of her son, Prince Albert II to Ms. Charlene Wittstock this July.”

The exhibition, organized by Sarah Coffin, curator and head of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department explores the historical significance of the firm’s contributions to jewelry design in the 20th century, including the establishment of Van Cleef & Arpels in New York with the advent of World War II. Its timeless pieces have been worn by style icons and includes objects such as the “Manchette” emerald bracelets, owned by Daisy Fellowes, which could be transformed to become one necklace; Elizabeth Taylor’s amethyst, coral and diamond bracelet and pendant earrings; a bracelet and necklace owned by Eva Peron; “Etruscan” cuffs similar to the ones worn by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis; and the “Jarretière” bracelet owned by Marlene Dietrich, which she wore in the movie Stage Fright.

The exhibition features more than 350 works, including jewels, timepieces, fashion accessories and objets d’art by Van Cleef & Arpels, drawn from numerous private collections and institutions, as well as the Van Cleef & Arpels’ museum collection. These objects, many of which were created exclusively for American clientele, will be supplemented with design drawings, commission books, fabrication cards and imagery from the firm’s archives.
