Henri Lorenzi’s landscape imagery that bespeaks of a communion with the forces of nature will remind the viewer of Northop Frye’s famous paraphrasing of Mircea Eliade’s writings on myths. Frye notes that the central symbolism and the central conception of myths and rituals is that a renewal in time is normally thought of as a renewal of time.

The recalling and the recapitulation of places and landscapes within time which is captured in Lorenzi’s Scotland. His work celebrates and heralds the imaginative patterns of the movements of natural forces. His work and its aura might easily be traced back to the School of Paris and to the German Romantics’ deep empathy with nature and later to the Transcen- dentalist movement’s roots in American landscape painting. Lorenzi’s images are evocations of the deep symbolism of life embedded within the cycles of nature.

Indeed, the strongly sculptural impulse in the Henri Lorenzi’s paintings and studies make them immediately recognizable as well as intensely realized. It is worth devoting a bit of time to look at the structurally sound pictorial strategy which the artist employs throughout his work. He adroitly translates the essential shapes of trees, hills and villages into spare works. Large areas of color connect pictorial fields and at the same time, become equivalents for light and space. Thus, his formal innovation offers us sensations of breathtaking views, vertiginous and strong flows of cascading currents — imagery that is simultaneously benign and awesome.

Such is the mystery of multi-valent visual drama, such is Lorenzi’s talent as a firmly committed and uniquely perceptive artist. For through his suggestive use of the symbolics of form he arouses subliminal readings of transcendence. The uni- versal language which he speaks in his art is one of narration and incremental readings rather than one of directness and of complete texts. The evident purposeful play of absence and presence is allowed its full presence in Lorenzi’s work which, in turn, charges it with a deep sense of authenticity.

Writing is a very important part of children’s learning as they progress through elementary school. As your child begins to master the basics to begin writing their name correctly, it is a good idea to hone fine motor skills while practicing both upper and lower case letters, even learning to spell some basic words. And the saying is already saying … ‘ check this link here where you can learn to write’. Today, there are many tests that children must pass in school and it seems that it is even more important than ever that parents emphasize the need for children to develop good skills to express themselves clearly and expressively. Here I am going to explain some fun activities you can do to encourage your children to develop good writing skills and habits that will last a lifetime. Journaling will not only be good for your child, but it will also help him understand the importance of writing. Choose a notebook that is special to your child and that uses it as a journal. Every night before bed, you can make it a routine for your child to write a sentence or two about his day. It can be something general like: ‘Today has been a fun day’ or maybe, you can highlight something that you really like or a thought that you have had either happy or sadder, such as: ‘I laughed when my brother tickled me ‘. As your child grows, he will begin to write down more things about his feelings and concerns. Journaling can be a great way to deal with stress and anxiety. Writing helps you feel better.

The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego will host an important retreat in October 2014 to address two of the most pressing issues impacting our planet—rising sea levels and ocean acidification, which are both linked to anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases and their impact on the climate. The retreat will take place at The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage, California.

The retreat is convened by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, Margaret Leinen, director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences at UC San Diego, and Geoffrey Cowan, president of The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands, USC University Professor and director of the USC Annenberg Center on Communication Leadership & Policy.

The retreat at Sunnylands will be followed—for the first time in the United States—by the seventh edition of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Awards recognizing excellence in the three main areas of the foundation’s mission: climate change and renewable energies, biodiversity, and integrated and sustainable water management together with the fight against desertification. It will be a star-studded evening featuring His Serene Highness Prince Albert, along with the brightest scientists, environmentalists, explorers, teachers, policy and government officials, major donors, politicians and leading lights from arts and entertainment, who all have one goal: to applaud and award three individuals or organizations whose efforts have vastly and sustainably improved the quality of all our lives. (www.fpa2.com )

The small, select group of participants will include leading policymakers, scientists, engineers and other public figures. In the Sunnylands tradition, identities of retreat participants will not be released in advance.

“For thousands of years, humanity has considered the sea as an infinite source of wealth, which was easy to exploit with no concern about its renewal. We now know that these vast expanses are not infinite. Above all, we know that our activities will have repercussions on them. Preservation of the environment cannot be accomplished against humans, on the contrary: it can only work by establishing a sustainable model, capable of reconciling the legitimate goals of population development and the impassable requirements of nature,” said Prince Albert. “By preserving the environment, and in particular the oceans which cover more than 70 per cent of the world’s surface, it is simply a question of making sure that future generations live on a planet which is not hostile towards them.”

“The Annenbergs created Sunnylands to foster international agreement on critical challenges facing our nation and world,” said Geoffrey Cowan. “While other important meetings have addressed mitigating emissions of greenhouse gases, there is also an urgent need to encourage the development of adaptation strategies. The October retreat will enable a gathering of top minds to provide leadership for adaptation strategies, with a special focus on the Pacific.”

“Sea-level rise is a key climate change impact that is already demanding adaptation at the local, regional, and global scale. Sea-level rise is flooding streets in low-lying communities, resulting in enhanced erosion of shoreline cliffs threatening infrastructure, and inundating critical shoreline habitats, and causing severe damage during storms. Geographic regions and governments are struggling to build capacity to address this global high-level challenge,” said Margaret Leinen. “This retreat will bring together key individuals who can accelerate global efforts to respond to this crisis.”

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo will celebrate choreographer-director Jean-Christophe Maillot‟s 20th anniversary this year by premiering LAC (after Swan Lake), Maillot‟s personal vision of Tchaikovsky‟s masterwork, with performances at The Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa (March 7 – 9) and the New York City Center (March 14 – 16).
LAC will be presented by Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, in association with The Segerstrom Center, New York City Center and Ardani Artists. Visual artist Ernest Pignon-Ernest designed the scenery, with costume design by Philippe Guillotel.

Jean-Christophe Maillot has re-worked Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky‟s pillar of the classic repertoire with the award-winning writer Jean Rouaud, bringing a modern-day relevance to the timeless story of Siegfried and Odette. The 2011 work explores the torments of childhood fears and nightmares. Buried experiences and memories are resurrected against a Machiavellian family backdrop to create a ballet of stark contrasts – good vs. evil, white vs. black, purity vs. eroticism – questions that define us as human beings.

“LAC is a new version of the classical ballet, honoring the past, but with a slice of contemporary codes,” said Jean-Christophe Maillot.” Today‟s audiences can feel attached to the story Swan Lake, one of ballet‟s most beautiful stories. It is a story of sensuality, about the ideal woman. The White Swan is the beautiful, pure woman every man falls in love with once in his life; the Black Swan represents sexuality, strength, power and control. We look forward to introducing this new ballet that that showcases the dancers‟ artistry with traditional and contemporary ballet styles,” he said.

“The combined creativity of Jean-Christophe and the company of Les Ballets, together with their passion for excellence, is reflected in this acclaimed production. We are truly delighted that these wonderful cultural envoys of the principality are back to showcase the singular cultural heritage of Monaco,” said Her Excellency Maguy Maccario Doyle, Monaco‟s Ambassador to the United States.

New Yorkers are invited to purchase a „Premiere Experience‟ package that includes premium seating for the New York performance of LAC on March 14, followed by an exclusive cast after-party hosted by the Consulate General of Monaco and the Monaco Government Tourist Office. Guests will have the chance to meet and mingle with director-choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot and the members of this world-renowned company, including principal dancers, while enjoying champagne, cocktails and fine food. Space is strictly limited to first 100 „Premiere Experience‟ ticket purchasers. Each „Premiere Experience’ ticket is $275.00 with all proceeds benefitting Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo. (www.MonacoTakesNY.com)

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo
Ballet has had a strong presence in Monaco since Russian impresario Serge de Diaghilev presented his legendary ballet company, Ballets Russes, in 1909. H.R.H. The Princess of Hanover, wanting to maintain the tradition of dance in Monaco, and to fulfil the wishes of Her mother, Princess Grace, formed Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo in 1985, under the direction of Ghislaine Thesmar and Pierre Lacotte, followed by Jean-Yves Esquerre.
In 1992, Jean-Christophe Maillot joined the company as artistic consultant and was promoted to the rank of Director-Choreographer in 1993. Today, the company consists of 50 dancers, and its repertoire includes works from the Ballets Russes and contemporary pieces from Maillot as well as acclaimed and emerging guest choreographers. The company has toured France, the United States and China and will soon travel to the U.K. In 2011, dance in Monaco underwent a major and historical change when H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover combined Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo company, the Monaco Dance Forum and the Princess Grace Academy into a single organization. Maillot was appointed head of this company, which now unites the excellence of an international company, the benefits of a multi-format festival and the potential of a high-level school. (www.balletsdemontecarlo.com)

Jean-Christophe Maillot
Born in 1960, Jean-Christophe Maillot studied dance and piano at the Conservatoire National de Région de Tours. He won the Prix de Lausanne in 1977 and went on to dance principal roles as a soloist at the Hamburg Ballet for five years. An accident brought his dancing career to an abrupt end. In 1983, he was appointed choreographer and director of the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Tours, which later became a National Centre of Choreography. In 1987 he became Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo‟s Artistic Advisor for the 1992-1993 season and was appointed Director-Choreographer by H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover in September 1993. His arrival set the company on a new path that quickly developed the level of maturity and excellence for which this company is renowned. He has created almost 30 ballets for the company, some of which have forged the reputation of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo across the world. Several of these works are now included in the repertoires of major international ballet companies. Maillot is known for his spirit of openness and his commitment to inviting choreographers with a different style to create for the company.
In 2000 he created the Monaco Dance Forum, an international showcase for dance. In 2009, he developed the content and coordinated the Centenary of the Ballets Russes in Monaco, which featured over 50 companies and choreographers. In 2011, H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover appointed Maillot head of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, a new organization uniting Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, the Monaco Dance Forum and the Princess Grace Academy under a single organization.

December 5, Her Excellency Maguy Maccario Doyle is the Principality’s new emissary to Washington DC following her appointment by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco. The Ambassador conveyed Prince Albert’s assurances of his highest consideration to President Barack Obama and his family, as she officially tendered her letter of credence to the President in a ceremony at the White House this week.

In congratulating Ambassador Maccario Doyle on her appointment and welcoming her family, President Obama outlined the importance of the two-country alliance built upon personal ties, shared values, and mutual cooperation. The President acknowledged Prince Albert’s commitment to the protection of the environment and the important work of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. He also cited the Ambassador’s distinguished record of philanthropy and cultural outreach, stating it would ensure the relationship between Monaco and the United States would continue to flourish in the years to come.

Ambassador Maccario Doyle, the first woman to hold the post at the Embassy which opened in 2006, has served as Consul General of Monaco in New York since 1997 and head of the Principality’s Tourism Board in North America since the early 1990s. As a founding member of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation-USA, she currently serves as its Vice President.

An engaging and highly accomplished diplomat and business woman, Ambassador Maccario Doyle has been a dedicated and skillful advocate for Monaco. Prince Rainier awarded her with Monaco’s distinguished Chevalier de l’Ordre de Saint-Charles in 1996. She is also a vigorous supporter of various humanitarian causes uniting Monaco with the United States. Her impressive track record as fund-raiser and organizer of charitable, philanthropic and cultural events is combined with a deep understanding of European and North American cultures.

“It is a tremendous honor for me to represent His Serene Highness, the Princely family and the Principality of Monaco. I’m deeply grateful to Prince Albert for his nomination. As great friends and staunch allies, Monaco and the United States will continue to forge lasting links with a sense of mutual respect and esteem,” said Ambassador Maccario Doyle.

“Our two countries share a strong commitment to international cooperation. Various collaborations and endeavors reflect the many ties that continue to unite Monaco and the United States in the pursuit of both nations’ shared interests and ideals,” she added.

“The memory of American-born Princess Grace has thrived since her wedding to Prince Rainier in 1956, and the Princess Grace Foundation-USA continues to celebrate the artistic legacy of Grace Kelly. Americans have come to the Principality in ever-increasing numbers and they currently represent one of the top five nationalities visiting Monaco.”

Among her many civic and charitable posts, Ambassador Maccario Doyle serves as a member of ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Professional Advisory Board (since 2004) and their International Advisory Council (since 2011). In recognition of her leadership following the events of September 11, 2001, Prince Albert presented her with the International Police Association – Diploma of Honor (Monaco Chapter).

The 2013 Awards Gala will be held at New York’s famed Cipriani 42nd Street, on Wednesday, October 30, in the presence of H.S.H. Princess Charlene of Monaco. The evening will be highlighted by the presentation of 24 awards to emerging artists in theater, dance and film, who hail from cities and states across America and will travel to New York City to receive their honor at the glamorous black tie ceremony followed by dinner, dancing and an exclusive silent auction. In addition, we will recognize a prominent leader in the arts whose own accomplishments inspire the next generation of artists with the prestigious Prince Rainier III Award. In past years, this Award has been bestowed upon Julie Andrews, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Glenn Close, George Lucas, Mandy Patinkin, Twyla Tharp, and Denzel& Pauletta Washington.

For more than three decades, the Princess Grace Awards program has provided encouragement and support to the most talented emerging artists in America, and has become one of the nation’s premier grant-making institutions. Notable past recipients include Stephen Hillenburg, creator of SpongeBob SquarePants; Tony Kushner, Pulitzer-Prize winning author of Angels in America; Robert Battle, Artistic Director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; Jon Chu, award-winning film director of the GI Joe 2: Cobra Strikes sequel, and Anna D. Shapiro, Tony Award-winning director of August Osage County – to name a few. Equally as important, we have supported nearly 700 artists who have continued to work and excel in their chosen art form.
