Henri Lorenzi’s landscape imagery that bespeaks of a communion with the forces of nature will remind the viewer of Northop Frye’s famous paraphrasing of Mircea Eliade’s writings on myths. Frye notes that the central symbolism and the central conception of myths and rituals is that a renewal in time is normally thought of as a renewal of time.

The recalling and the recapitulation of places and landscapes within time which is captured in Lorenzi’s Scotland. His work celebrates and heralds the imaginative patterns of the movements of natural forces. His work and its aura might easily be traced back to the School of Paris and to the German Romantics’ deep empathy with nature and later to the Transcen- dentalist movement’s roots in American landscape painting. Lorenzi’s images are evocations of the deep symbolism of life embedded within the cycles of nature.

Indeed, the strongly sculptural impulse in the Henri Lorenzi’s paintings and studies make them immediately recognizable as well as intensely realized. It is worth devoting a bit of time to look at the structurally sound pictorial strategy which the artist employs throughout his work. He adroitly translates the essential shapes of trees, hills and villages into spare works. Large areas of color connect pictorial fields and at the same time,become equivalents for light and space. Thus, his formal innovation offers us sensations of breathtaking views, vertiginous and strong flows of cascading currents — imagery that is simultaneously benign and awesome.

Such is the mystery of multi-valent visual drama, such is Lorenzi’s talent as a firmly committed and uniquely perceptive artist. For through his suggestive use of the symbolics of form he arouses subliminal readings of transcendence. The uni- versal language which he speaks in his art is one of narration and incremental readings rather than one of directness and of complete texts. The evident purposeful play of absence and presence is allowed its full presence in Lorenzi’s work which, in turn, charges it with a deep sense of authenticity.

NEW YORK (June 16, 2014) – The acclaimed boys choir of the Principality, formerly known as The Little Singers of Monaco (Les Petits Chanteurs de Monaco), will kick off their summer tour of the USA’s east coast – in their 40^th anniversary year – with free performances in New York City.  The choir will entertain audiences at the world’s largest cathedral, St. John the Divine, in New York’s upper west side on July 11 at 2:00pm.  The boys will close the New York leg of the tour with a performance at the French Institute Alliance Française’s annual “Bastille Day on 60^th Street” event at 2:00pm on July 13.

About the Monaco Boys Choir

Under the patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert of Monaco, and through the generous support of the Monégasque government, the choir donates its time and talents to concerts organized on behalf of humanitarian associations throughout the world.

The award-winning ensemble – under the direction of Pierre Debat – was founded in 1974 by Prince Rainier III and comprises more than 30 angelic voices. Created to showcase the Principality’s historic association with culture and the performing arts, the official choir of the Monaco Cathedral is composed of talented singers aged between eight to 18 years, who have passed rigorous examinations before being admitted into the prestigious group.  They traditionally embark on a spring tour of Europe and a summer tour to more far-flung destinations. The choir, renowned for their unusual repertoire of works written for children, has visited more than 40 countries around the world and performs an average of 40 concerts a year.

Their musical repertoire includes sacred musical works by Charpentier, Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Fauré and Franck; Monégasque folk songs; English-language songs as well as patriotic American songs, some of which they performed live on NBC’s The Today Show during a past visit.

On previous U.S. tours, the choir has appeared at Yankee Stadium, in Bryant Park and St. Bartholomew’sChurch in New York City, as well as on stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and Palm Beach’s Kravis Center.

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo will celebrate choreographer-director Jean-Christophe Maillot‟s 20th anniversary this year by premiering LAC (after Swan Lake), Maillot‟s personal vision of Tchaikovsky‟s masterwork, with performances at The Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa (March 7 – 9) and the New York City Center (March 14 – 16).
LAC will be presented by Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, in association with The Segerstrom Center, New York City Center and Ardani Artists. Visual artist Ernest Pignon-Ernest designed the scenery, with costume design by Philippe Guillotel.

Jean-Christophe Maillot has re-worked Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky‟s pillar of the classic repertoire with the award-winning writer Jean Rouaud, bringing a modern-day relevance to the timeless story of Siegfried and Odette. The 2011 work explores the torments of childhood fears and nightmares. Buried experiences and memories are resurrected against a Machiavellian family backdrop to create a ballet of stark contrasts – good vs. evil, white vs. black, purity vs. eroticism – questions that define us as human beings.

“LAC is a new version of the classical ballet, honoring the past, but with a slice of contemporary codes,” said Jean-Christophe Maillot.” Today‟s audiences can feel attached to the story Swan Lake, one of ballet‟s most beautiful stories. It is a story of sensuality, about the ideal woman. The White Swan is the beautiful, pure woman every man falls in love with once in his life; the Black Swan represents sexuality, strength, power and control. Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo
Ballet has had a strong presence in Monaco since Russian impresario Serge de Diaghilev presented his legendary ballet company, Ballets Russes, in 1909. H.R.H. The Princess of Hanover, wanting to maintain the tradition of dance in Monaco, and to fulfil the wishes of Her mother, Princess Grace, formed Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo in 1985, under the direction of Ghislaine Thesmar and Pierre Lacotte, followed by Jean-Yves Esquerre.
In 1992, Jean-Christophe Maillot joined the company as artistic consultant and was promoted to the rank of Director-Choreographer in 1993. Today, the company consists of 50 dancers, and its repertoire includes works from the Ballets Russes and contemporary pieces from Maillot as well as acclaimed and emerging guest choreographers. The company has toured France, the United States and China and will soon travel to the U.K. In 2011, dance in Monaco underwent a major and historical change when H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover combined Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo company, the Monaco Dance Forum and the Princess Grace Academy into a single organization. Maillot was appointed head of this company, which now unites the excellence of an international company, the benefits of a multi-format festival and the potential of a high-level school. Jean-Christophe Maillot
Born in 1960, Jean-Christophe Maillot studied dance and piano at the Conservatoire National de Région de Tours. He won the Prix de Lausanne in 1977 and went on to dance principal roles as a soloist at the Hamburg Ballet for five years. An accident brought his dancing career to an abrupt end. In 1983, he was appointed choreographer and director of the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Tours, which later became a National Centre of Choreography. In 1987 he became Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo‟s Artistic Advisor for the 1992-1993 season and was appointed Director-Choreographer by H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover in September 1993. His arrival set the company on a new path that quickly developed the level of maturity and excellence for which this company is renowned. He has created almost 30 ballets for the company, some of which have forged the reputation of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo across the world. Several of these works are now included in the repertoires of major international ballet companies. Maillot is known for his spirit of openness and his commitment to inviting choreographers with a different style to create for the company.
In 2000 he created the Monaco Dance Forum, an international showcase for dance. In 2009, he developed the content and coordinated the Centenary of the Ballets Russes in Monaco, which featured over 50 companies and choreographers. In 2011, H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover appointed Maillot head of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, a new organization uniting Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, the Monaco Dance Forum and the Princess Grace Academy under a single organization.

The exhibition features a selection of works fromMONACOPOLIS: Architecture, Urbanism and Urbanization in Monaco, Realizations and Projects – 1858-2012 from the Nouveau Musée National of Monaco (NMNM), curated by Nathalie Giordano-Rosticher, Curator in Chief at the NMNM. As a complement to this exhibition, a special screening of the docudrama, Monte-Carlo, Birth of a Legend will take place at the FIAF screening room on Wednesday, June 19 at 8pm. Written by Kate Krasuski and directed by François Freynet, it recounts the fascinating, behind-the-scenes story of Monte-Carlo’s creation.

In 2006, the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco commissioned Gabriele Basilico to photograph the legendary destination, resulting in over 200 photographs. His vision revealed a Principality shaped by history, labyrinthine urban development, and its geographic location between the mountains and the sea.

Born in Milan, Basilico is an award-winning photographer known for capturing the world’s largest metropolises, including Beirut, Sao Paolo, San Francisco, and Naples. He began his career documenting the industrialization of Milan and the transformation of the transalpine landscape.

The exhibition also features archival footage evoking the history of the Principality of Monaco, including an interview of Prince Rainier (the “Builder Prince”) from the film Rainier de Monaco Prince & PDG, and an installation of postcards in the shape of Monaco, commissioned by the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco and designed by Åbäke, London and Nathalie Rosticher Giordano, Chief Curator at NNMM.

150 years ago an unprecedented adventure began in one of the smallest Principalities in Europe. Within less than twenty years, a simple plateau of farmland on the Mediterranean coast would become one of the most celebrated destinations in the world, and a dazzling symbol of prosperity: Monte-Carlo.

The main players in this success were an intrepid French financier and a romantic, young German woman with a gift for the arts and a love for Belle Epoque design. Their names were François Blanc and Marie Hensel. These two relative unknowns founded the famed Société des Bains de Mer of Monte-Carlo, which today manages a vast heritage.

It is the storybook tale of an exceptional, passionate couple, the visionary creators of the myth of Monte-Carlo at the end of the nineteenth century. Travel back in time to discover the princes, dukes, Russian colonels, writers Alexandre Dumas and Jules Verne, composers Camille Saint-Saëns and Jules Massenet, the Rockefellers, and many other celebrities and statesmen who have imbued Monte-Carlo with its illustrious history. (In French with English subtitles)

About Gabriele Basilico

Born in Milan in 1944, Basilico was an award-winning photographer known for capturing the world’s largest metropolises, including Beirut, Sao Paolo, San Francisco, and Naples. After studying architecture, Basilico began his career photographing the factories of Milan. He was then commissioned by the French Government, alongside an international group of photographers, to document the transformation of the transalpine landscape. Basilico photographed the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, and accepted a commission in 1991 to photograph Beirut and the effects of fifteen years of civil war within Lebanon’s capital. In 1994, The Foundation Gottardo, Lugano hosted the first retrospective of Basilico’s work, and he was awarded the prestigious Osella d’Oro award at the Venice Biennale in 1996. Basilico’s photographs have been the subject of numerous international museum exhibitions, Biennials and publications, including the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, which hosted the largest retrospective of his works to date. Gabriele Basilico died on February 13, 2013.

About François Freynet

François Freynet has written and directed documentaries for French TV including France 2, France 3, France 5, andGroupe Canal Plus. In 1994, Freynet directed the seriesLes Amants du Siècle for Fréderic Mitterrand. Since then, his writer/director credits have included Les passagers du 20h02 (1997) and Des chiens en analyse(1999) as well as docu-dramas for Disney, the Disney Club, and Disney Parade TV shows, and the 52-minute documentary/drama Monte-Carlo, Birth of a Legend(2007). He established his company, Movies Productionsin May 2008. Freynet is also a professor of screenwriting, a documentary judge, and a lecturer on filmmaking for the International Institute of Image and Sound near Paris.

About Kate Krasuski

With a background in public relations, Nice-based Kate Krasuski handles communications and PR for audio-visual productions, music concerts, and jazz festivals. She has been a booking agent for Harry Lapp Organization (Nice Jazz Festival, Jazz à Juan, Les Enfants de Django, Roy Hargrove, Ballets de Kazan, Tango Pasion, Sidney Bechet Memory All Stars, Porgy & Bess), AA Organisation (100 Violons Tziganes de Budapest, Rock The Ballet, Ain’t Misbehavin’), and Live Music International (Craig Adams & The Voices of New Orleans, Miss Jean Carpenter, Davell Crawford, Nicole Slake Jones, La Nuit du Gospel).  In 2007, she co-wrote, with François Freynet, the 52-minute documentary/drama, Monte-Carlo, Birth of a Legend.
