To celebrate the fabled history of Monte-Carlo, the Consulate General of Monaco and the Monaco Government Tourist Office in New York present Mythical Monte-Carlo: 150 Years in the Making, an exhibition showcasing the remarkable architecture of this captivating Principality on the Mediterranean, as seen through the lens of award-winning documentary photographer Gabriele Basilico (1944-2013). Mythical Monte-Carlo will be on view at the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) Gallery in New York from June 20 through August 23. (www.MonacoTakesNewYork.com)

The exhibition features a selection of works fromMONACOPOLIS: Architecture, Urbanism and Urbanization in Monaco, Realizations and Projects – 1858-2012 from the Nouveau Musée National of Monaco (NMNM), curated by Nathalie Giordano-Rosticher, Curator in Chief at the NMNM. As a complement to this exhibition, a special screening of the docudrama, Monte-Carlo, Birth of a Legend will take place at the FIAF screening room on Wednesday, June 19 at 8pm. Written by Kate Krasuski and directed by François Freynet, it recounts the fascinating, behind-the-scenes story of Monte-Carlo’s creation.

“The ties between Monaco, France, and the USA are deep and binding, so it is quite fitting—and we are delighted—that Monaco’s Consulate and Tourist office in New York are collaborating with FIAF to celebrate 150 years of Monte-Carlo style,” said Maguy Maccario Doyle, consul general and director of the Monaco Government Tourist Office (North America).

“It is a true pleasure for us to partner with Monte-Carlo SBM Hotels & Casinos – who mark their 150th anniversary this year – and the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, to welcome visitors to this exhibition by award-winning photographer, Gabriele Basilico, which showcases the eclectic architecture of our Principality on the Mediterranean Sea.”

Gabriele Basilico: Mythical Monte-Carlo: 150 Years in the Making

Thursday, June 20—Friday, August 23, FIAF Gallery

In 2006, the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco commissioned Gabriele Basilico to photograph the legendary destination, resulting in over 200 photographs. His vision revealed a Principality shaped by history, labyrinthine urban development, and its geographic location between the mountains and the sea.

Born in Milan, Basilico is an award-winning photographer known for capturing the world’s largest metropolises, including Beirut, Sao Paolo, San Francisco, and Naples. He began his career documenting the industrialization of Milan and the transformation of the transalpine landscape.

The exhibition also features archival footage evoking the history of the Principality of Monaco, including an interview of Prince Rainier (the “Builder Prince”) from the film Rainier de Monaco Prince & PDG, and an installation of postcards in the shape of Monaco, commissioned by the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco and designed by Åbäke, London and Nathalie Rosticher Giordano, Chief Curator at NNMM.

Special Screening

Monte-Carlo, naissance d’un mythe (Monte-Carlo, Birth of a Legend)

Wednesday, June 19 at 8pm, Florence Gould Hall

François Freynet, 2007. Color. 52 min

150 years ago an unprecedented adventure began in one of the smallest Principalities in Europe. Within less than twenty years, a simple plateau of farmland on the Mediterranean coast would become one of the most celebrated destinations in the world, and a dazzling symbol of prosperity: Monte-Carlo.

The main players in this success were an intrepid French financier and a romantic, young German woman with a gift for the arts and a love for Belle Epoque design. Their names were François Blanc and Marie Hensel. These two relative unknowns founded the famed Société des Bains de Mer of Monte-Carlo, which today manages a vast heritage.

It is the storybook tale of an exceptional, passionate couple, the visionary creators of the myth of Monte-Carlo at the end of the nineteenth century. Travel back in time to discover the princes, dukes, Russian colonels, writers Alexandre Dumas and Jules Verne, composers Camille Saint-Saëns and Jules Massenet, the Rockefellers, and many other celebrities and statesmen who have imbued Monte-Carlo with its illustrious history. (In French with English subtitles)

About Gabriele Basilico

Born in Milan in 1944, Basilico was an award-winning photographer known for capturing the world’s largest metropolises, including Beirut, Sao Paolo, San Francisco, and Naples. After studying architecture, Basilico began his career photographing the factories of Milan. He was then commissioned by the French Government, alongside an international group of photographers, to document the transformation of the transalpine landscape. Basilico photographed the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, and accepted a commission in 1991 to photograph Beirut and the effects of fifteen years of civil war within Lebanon’s capital. In 1994, The Foundation Gottardo, Lugano hosted the first retrospective of Basilico’s work, and he was awarded the prestigious Osella d’Oro award at the Venice Biennale in 1996. Basilico’s photographs have been the subject of numerous international museum exhibitions, Biennials and publications, including the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, which hosted the largest retrospective of his works to date. Gabriele Basilico died on February 13, 2013.

Monaco’s world-renowned Oceanographic Museum, along with the Villa Paloma – one half of the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, will share a ground-breaking exhibition, Oceanomania, Memories of the Mysterious Seas from 12 April to 30 September, 2011.

This project by Mark Dion, acclaimed New York-based artist, who is also a naturalist, archaeologist and explorer, will comprise a huge cabinet filled with marine curiosities in the Oceanographic Museum and a companion art installation in the Villa Paloma.

Oceanomania, Memories of the Mysterious Seas highlights two significant and quite different maritime events, which form the conceptual framework of this project: Census of Marine Life which was completed in 2010, and the fatal April 2010 explosion at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dion’s perception of, and passion for, the ocean lies behind this project. He poses questions about the evolution of Man’s fascination for the sea in time and space, design, literature and art.

Mark Dion’s exhibition at the Villa Paloma will showcase works by 20 artists including such esteemed names as Lucio Fontana, J.M.W Turner and Alphonse Visconti. These works depict the ocean as a vast territory, ripe for further exploration and new discoveries.
The exhibition, organized by Sarah Coffin, curator and head of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department explores the historical significance of the firm’s contributions to jewelry design in the 20th century, including the establishment of Van Cleef & Arpels in New York with the advent of World War II. Its timeless pieces have been worn by style icons and includes objects such as the “Manchette” emerald bracelets, owned by Daisy Fellowes, which could be transformed to become one necklace; Elizabeth Taylor’s amethyst, coral and diamond bracelet and pendant earrings; a bracelet and necklace owned by Eva Peron; “Etruscan” cuffs similar to the ones worn by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis; and the “Jarretière” bracelet owned by Marlene Dietrich, which she wore in the movie Stage Fright.

The exhibition features more than 350 works, including jewels, timepieces, fashion accessories and objets d’art by Van Cleef & Arpels, drawn from numerous private collections and institutions, as well as the Van Cleef & Arpels’ museum collection. These objects, many of which were created exclusively for American clientele, will be supplemented with design drawings, commission books, fabrication cards and imagery from the firm’s archives.

Pastor will present 20 of his recent works, focusing on three series: “The Hearts”, “The Bulls” and his latest series, “H2o”.

This exhibition is his first in a New York gallery. In May 2008 he installed his series “Les Arbres Brûlés” (Burned Trees) at the United Nations Headquarters.

Born in Monaco in 1961, Philippe Pastor is an autodidact.

At a very early age, he was lucky enough to enjoy the company of César, Antoni Clavé and Paul Rebeyrolle.

Established in a former sheepfold in La Garde-Freinet, a small town in the South of France, his approach has always been to work directly with Nature, and to translate Man’s attachment to the Earth.

He has been active for many years on both the international front and in Southern France and has exhibited his works in many prestigious public and private venues such as the 52nd and 53rd Venice Biennial (2007 and 2009).

Protection of Nature and Man’s negligence towards our planet are the main themes expressed by the artist that led him to work on different series, among them, “The Hearts” and “H2o”, which will be showcased at the Opera Gallery NYC.

“The Hearts” collection conveys a crucial message: to destroy Nature is to destroy Man. Each heart painted by Philippe Pastor reports a crime, denounces man’s blindness towards the destruction of the environment.

“The H20” his latest series, is a testimony to the need for the preservation of natural resources. These compositions represent the “water cycle” flow. The title’s scientific connotations, seeks to remind us that Man – like the surface of the Earth – consists of nearly 70% of water and as we know, water is nowadays a sinew of war: this is a geopolitical reality.

These works reflect this paradox, portraying a menacing atmosphere rather than the liveliness and lightness that would be expected.

This set of new artworks by Philippe Pastor is a compilation of the artist’s universe, featuring his favorite themes, elements and techniques.

Throughout this summer, and for the first time, the monumental works of the eminent Spanish sculptor, Manolo Valdés, will take pride of place on two mythical sites on the Côte d’Azur: the Principality of Monaco and Saint-Tropez. The Monaco exhibition, under the High Patronage of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince of Monaco will be installed in the Monte-Carlo Casino Gardens and will feature seven massive bronze sculptures which will dominate the area. Four other sculptures will occupy several main sites in the city of Saint-Tropez, accompanied by a group of five sculptures, depicting Las Meninas, at the entrance to the citadel of Saint-Tropez.
The exhibition of monumental sculptures by Manolo Valdés is presented in conjunction with the exhibition of paintings by the artist, to be held at the Marlborough Gallery Monaco from 24 June to 18 September 2009 and provides an unique opportunity to discover the polymorphic work of Manolo Valdés. The exhibition at the Casino Gardens will end on 30 September (and in Saint-Tropez on 31 October). Sponsors include the Marlborough Gallery in Monaco and Monte-Carlo SBM.
Manolo Valdés, a great connoisseur of Art History, has drawn inspiration from a variety of influences over the years. Old masterpieces are the main inspiration for his creations, including works by great masters such as Masaccio, Ribera, Velasquez, Goya, Bonnard, Matisse and Picasso. Through his sculptures and paintings, Valdés recounts the major periods in the history of art, presenting new, independent and original work. Often focusing on specific pictorial details, he updates images from the past and stimulates our visual memory. His dramatic use and combining of various materials demonstrates his creativity and the importance he accords to the sense of touch. The effects of imperfection, tears, non-completion and welding which can be seen in his work and which have been carefully developed, reveal the texture of the support and reinforce the reference to touch, so central to the artist’s approach.
Born in 1942 in Valencia (Spain) Manolo Valdés enters the Fine Arts School San Carlos of Valencia which he left in 1958 to devote his life to painting. In 1964, Valdés formed the group Equipo Cronica with Joan A. Toledo and Rafael Solbes, one of the most important Pop Art group in Spain. Valdés and Solbes continued their association until the death of Solbes in 1981. Through Equipo Crόnica, Manolo Valdés participated in more than 60 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions.
In 1982, the artist entered his artistic revision period, according ever more importance to texture and support. During this period, he became interested in the opportunities offered by volume and the three-dimensional variations in the iconography of Velasquez. Since 1983, he has been working with sculpture and, gradually, has found his own voice through an infinite number of materials such as alabaster, bronze, marble, granite, ceramic, silver and, above all, wood, which he appreciates for its irregularity and natural polychromy. In 1999, he started to reproduce the images of Velasquez in bronze. He has also created a series of impressive heads adorned with hats inspired by the paintings of Matisse: heads transformed into caryatids crowned by a mixture of unusual shapes and patterns.
The year 1999 also marked the beginning of installations with a project for the city of Bilbao. Then public commissions and temporary installations followed: La Dama de Elche designed for the city of Valencia, whose first large-scale model is placed in 2002 on Park Avenue; Las Damas de Barajas in the airport in Madrid; La Dama del Manzanares (13 meters high) in Madrid; Reina Mariana in Monte Carlo. Since then, his large sculptures have been exhibited in such cities as Biarritz, Munich, Bilbao and Murcia.
The artist has received many awards and commendations and numerous solo exhibitions and retrospectives have been devoted to him throughout his career, including in 2002 at the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao and in 2006 at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. In 2005 a major exhibition of Meninas was held at the Palais Royal in Paris and in 2006 a personal exhibition at the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul de Vence. In 2007 his monumental works were presented at Bryant Park in New York and in 2008 in Las Ramblas of Barcelona. The same year two major exhibitions were held at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg and the National Art Museum of China in Beijing.
