The United Nations nuclear agency, IAEA, has announced a new center will be launched in Monaco this summer to help coordinate global research efforts to combat the serious environmental problem of ocean acidification.

“During the past five years, numerous multinational and national research projects on ocean acidification have emerged and significant research advances have been made,” the International Atomic Energy Agency said.

“The time is now ripe to provide international coordination to gain the greatest value from national efforts and research investments,” said Daud bin Mohamad, IAEA Deputy Director General for Nuclear Sciences and Applications.

The growing amounts of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere through human activity are being absorbed in the planet’s oceans, increasing their acidity.

According to experts, ocean acidification may render most regions of the ocean inhospitable to coral reefs by 2050 if atmospheric carbon dioxide levels continue to increase, the IAEA said. This could lead to substantial changes in commercial fish stocks, threatening food security for millions of people as well as the multi-billion-dollar fishing industry, it added.

The new center will be overseen by national and international bodies including the UN Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and leading scientists and economists in the field. (From Agence France-Presse)

Exhibition features extraordinary photography of mountaineer David Breashears… and a unique installation showcasing Monaco’s remarkable environmental legacy

The MIT Museum will open Rivers of Ice: Vanishing Glaciers of the Greater Himalaya featuring the breath-taking photography of mountaineer and film maker David Breashears on April 13, 2012 (through March 17, 2013), with the support of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
At the heart of Rivers of Ice – a collaboration between the MIT Museum, GlacierWorks, and the Asia Society, designed by ThincDesign, — are contemporary, state-of-the-art digital photographs taken by Breashears from the same vantage points as archival photos taken a century ago. Presented in large format and viewed alongside much older images — some taken from 19th-century glass-plate negatives — these high-resolution images make plain the threat posed to Himalayan glaciers. Formed by the collision of continents, the massive Himalayan mountain range is of profound historic, cultural and scientific significance. By experiencing the photography ‘in the round’ on a large scale and viewing artifacts from expeditions past and present, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the beauty of these glacial mountains, and their significance to the water cycle that sustains lives.

“Rivers of Ice provides visitors with a realistic, tangible understanding of the devastating consequences of climate change. Through painstaking attention to detail by comparing century-old archival images with David Breashears’s stunning contemporary photographs taken from the same position and in the same season, this spectacular exhibition unmistakably documents the decline of the Himalayan glaciers that are the water reservoirs for something like 4 billion people,” said J.B. Kelly, President of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation-USA.

In an uncanny parallel, at the turn of the last century Monaco’s Prince Albert I, photographed and documented the glaciers of the north polar regions, and 100 years later in 2006, his great-great grandson, Monaco’s current sovereign, Prince Albert II produced comparative research and photography during an expedition retracing his forebear’s footsteps.

To complement the Rivers of Ice exhibition, a unique cylindrical installation featuring a documentary-style broadcast juxtaposing both expeditions, followed by an up-to-date look at the global work of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, will be on view on the second floor of the MIT Museum through April 30, 2012.

The installation, an internally-lit 8ftx5ft cylinder (output is equal to just one 100W light bulb), blends creativity, cutting-edge design and energy efficiency. By combining AV techniques, architectural elements, graphic design, and an animated kaleidoscopic experience from the Hollywood-based special effects team who worked on “The Incredible Hulk” and “Spider-Man”, it seamlessly projects a cool image of a hot topic.

Historic footage chronologically recounts Monaco’s sovereigns from the first Prince Albert (the “Navigator Prince”) who sailed the oceans in the late 1800s and early 1900s seeking ways to preserve them, through to Prince Rainier III who guided the principality through remarkable economic and cultural change in the 20th century, up to today with his son, Prince Albert II who upholds Monaco’s preservation efforts and conservation stewardship through his foundation. The installation also details three North American projects supported by the Foundation by highlighting the three main areas of its focus and mission:

Biodiversity: Strengthening conservation gains across the Solomon Islands – a partnership with The American Museum of Natural History in New York;

Climate change: Establishing new conservation landscapes in Amazonian Peru – a partnership with The Field Museum in Chicago; and

Water resource management: Water for the people in the tropics of Honduras – a partnership with One Drop of Canada

Commissioned by Maguy Maccario, Monaco’s consul general in New York and vice president of the Foundation’s US chapter, she said that Monaco has an illustrious record of environmental stewardship dating back more than a century to the first Prince Albert and encompassing the reign of Prince Rainier.

“Today Prince Albert has enhanced and extended that distinguished legacy with the establishment of his Foundation — with its huge international reach — and by implementing many sound conservation initiatives within the principality,” said Maccario.

“We have a special cross-cultural and educational affinity with MIT with the recent (2009) visit to the MIT campus by His Serene Highness Prince Albert and the subsequent hosting in Monaco in October 2010 of the Futurum/MIT Energy Initiative under His patronage, as well as the world premiere at the Monte-Carlo Opera House of the MIT Media Lab’s Death & The Powers opera by Professor Tod Machover.”

“This exhibition and related events which are proudly supported by the Consulate General of Monaco in New York, provides yet more welcome opportunities to advance our friendship and deepen our ties while collaborating on the vital topic of mutual interest, environmental conservation and education,” she said.

The exhibition, a related symposium being organized by the Cambridge Science Festival (through April 20-29) and other events throughout 2012, will provide insight to some of the most groundbreaking environmental research currently taking place, and offer the public the opportunity to engage with scientists and researchers.

Rivers of Ice: Vanishing Glaciers of the Greater Himalaya, which opens April 13, 2012, has been funded in part by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Farvue Foundation. The MIT Museum is open daily from 10:00am – 5:00pm (closed on major holidays). Admission: Adults: $8.50; under 18, students and seniors: $4.00. MIT ID and children under 5: Free admission.

Sundays (10:00am-Noon) and second Fridays of each month (5:00pm-8:00pm): Free admission.

Photos of the exhibition for press may be found at: http://web.mit.edu/museum/about/pr/2012/vanishing-glaciers.pdf

Signed on March 9, the agreement will help reduce deforestation and degradation of the region while providing education, health, and fire prevention for the community of Carmelita at the center of the reserve in Guatemala’s northern Peten region.

The community is located at the gateway to the archaeological site of El Mirador. This concentration of ancient Mayan cities that archaeologists call the cradle of Mayan civilization is threatened by human activities, including illegal logging, farming, and ranching in protected areas, as well as drug trafficking, poaching and looting of Maya artifacts.

“Drug trafficking money is fueling a massive ranching industry, which has virtually destroyed the Maya Biosphere within the past five years,” says FARES (the Foundation for Anthropological Research and Environmental Studies).

Now, instead of facing further devastation, the community has attracted the protection of conservation groups from Guatemala and abroad.

In exchange for protecting the surrounding forest, the Carmelita community will receive support for education, health and fire prevention. The deal includes the enforcement of bans on hunting of jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay, tapir, howler monkey, spider monkey, scarlet macaw, ocellated turkey, harpy eagle, and other endangered wildlife.

While the Mirador Basin has been plundered and looted for decades, a powerful group of international and local conservationists and foundations is turning the situation around.

Signatories to the new agreement include: Carmelita Cooperative, the Carmelita Community Development Council, Asociacion BALAM with the support of the Guatemalan Protected Areas Council, the Association of Forest Communities of Peten, the Rainforest Alliance,The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, and the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society.

On April 20, 2011, Prince Albert II of Monaco visited Mirador to witness the conservation progress led by Dr. Richard Hansen of FARES and to show his support for PACUNAM in the Mirador Project.

“We have to save this place,” the Prince said during his visit, before signing a cooperation agreement with PACUNAM. His foundation, The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, adds the Mirador conservation initiative in the Maya Biosphere Reserve to its nine other forestry projects.

The Mirador basin is one of the most biodiverse sanctuaries for wildlife in the Western Hemisphere. The reserve was created in 1990 to protect the largest area of tropical forest remaining in Central America and is part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

WCS’s work in the region is made possible through the support of the New York-based Prospect Hill Foundation and the Governance and Transparency Fund of the UK Department for International Development.

Another signatory is PACUNAM, which stands for Fundacion Patrimonio Cultural y Natural Maya, a Guatemalan foundation made up of 13 corporations and families wishing to preserve the country’s natural and cultural heritage through sustainable development. PACUNAM is the Global Heritage Fund’s conservation partner in Guatemala.

For Mirador, PACUNAM has secured US$3 million in funding for conservation and sustainable development. A key goal of the GHF Mirador project is to assist the Guatemalan government in securing permanent protection and UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for the park.

In 2009, Wildlife Conservation Society and the nonprofit Conservation International formed a partnership with Guatemala’s Protected Areas Council to implement the country’s first community-based conservation incentives payment system.

This contract among local communities, the Guatemalan government, NGO partners, and donors was intended to help stem deforestation and provide annual economic incentives to be designed and managed by local communities.

Money started to flow into the community and by 2010, the Mirador had 80 full-time rangers and funding for enforcement.

The Carmelita agreement is the third such agreement in the Maya Biosphere Reserve, with other successful examples in the Uaxactun Community Forest Concession and the community of Paso Caballos in Laguna del Tigre National Park.

“Conservation agreements are a win-win for both the people and wildlife of the Maya Biosphere Reserve,” said Julie Kunen, director of WCS’s Latin America and Caribbean Program. “The agreements address pressing development needs and provide real incentives for the people living in and around the reserve to protect its animals and conserve its forests.”

The archeologists at FARES say the Mirador Basin contains the earliest and largest Preclassic Maya cities known in Mesoamerica. “These cities are filled with massive constructions including pyramids, temples, palaces, causeways, and other remnants of a highly evolved and complex society,” the foundation says.

As far back as the 1480s – as outlined in the famous poem from the Boke of St. Albans, the regal peregrine has been associated with Princes, so it is truly fitting that the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation has teamed up with The Peregrine Fund, Inc to focus on present day conservation efforts. To mark this collaborative partnership, a Memorandum of Understanding between the US chapter of the Prince’s Foundation and The Peregrine Fund has been signed.

The main purpose of the MoU is to underscore the relationship between the two organizations and agree to the co-ordination of future projects, knowledge-sharing, and fund-raising activities and events. This two year, renewable agreement will see the Foundation and the Fund each appoint a representative to a coordination committee to oversee joint activities in the fields of raptor conservation, climate change including renewable energies, water management and sustainable development

“Protection of biodiversity is one of the three key objectives of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. Therefore, as part of the efforts to develop its actions in the United States, it is important for the Foundation to join forces with internationally renowned organizations such as The Peregrine Fund to increase awareness on the importance of safeguarding emblematic bird species, “said H.E. Mr. Bernard Fautrier, Vice President and CEO, The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

“In our ongoing commitment to achieving the goals of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, this alliance with The Peregrine Fund, a renowned US conservation organization, will enable us to undertake conservation projects of importance to both our organizations. Raptors, like the polar bear, are at the top of their food chains. Ensuring their survival requires protection of the entire ecosystem to support that food chain. In our efforts to protect raptors and polar bears, we learn important lessons on protecting the ecosystems that support the top predator of all, humans.” said Mr. John B. Kelly, III, President, The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation – USA.

“The Peregrine Fund is pleased to bring its conservation expertise, proven success, and focus on birds of prey to this joint initiative with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. Birds of prey, as far-ranging, top predators are acutely sensitive to environmental change and serve both as sentinel species that reveal conservation needs, and as umbrella species that help protect biodiversity,” said Mr. J. Peter Jenny, President, The Peregrine Fund, Inc.

“An exceptional synergy exists between both these distinguished organizations and, it is hoped that our
complementary resources and mutual compatibility will result in lasting benefits to many threatened birdlife populations,” said the Hon. Maguy Maccario, Consul General of Monaco and Vice President, The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation – USA who, along with Dr. Richard T. Watson, Vice President and International Programs Director, will make up the co-coordination committee.

Among those Peregrine Fund initiatives which may be jointly funded or supported include:

1) a climate change initiative focused on the Gyrfalcon, a species that breeds exclusively in the Arctic where the effects of climate warming are predicted to be greatest and have already raised mean annual temperatures by 3°C;

2) a biodiversity initiative in Madagascar to develop sustainable community-based conservation areas that will protect critical habitat for endangered species which exist only on this island nation and nowhere else on earth; and

3) a species restoration project to save the critically endangered Ridgway’s Hawk on Hispaniola, Dominican Republic, a Caribbean island that is rapidly losing its natural biodiversity resources.

The Peregrine Fund’s recent major conservation successes have included

Progress in restoration of the critically endangered California Condor in the United States, a species that was extinct in the wild and sustained only in captivity for a period in the 1980s, which is now soaring back from the brink through a program of captive breeding and release. The major hurdle remaining for the species’ survival in the wild is lead poisoning from spent ammunition which could be solved by the use of non-lead bullets and shot by hunters. The Peregrine Fund’s work also revealed the risk of lead exposure to people who eat game harvested with lead-based ammunition.

Research and discovery of a pharmaceutical drug, diclofenac, used in veterinary practice, as the cause behind the catastrophic collapse of vulture populations in South Asia. Safe alternative drugs were found, diclofenac was banned from veterinary applications in Pakistan, India, and Nepal, and vulture populations are beginning to stabilize.

Assisting the creation of Madagascar’s largest national park based in part on the ecological needs of the Madagascar Serpent Eagle, a species once thought to be extinct but rediscovered by The Peregrine Fund on Masoala Peninsula. Additional successes there include the rediscovery of the Madagascar Red Owl and Madagascar Pochard (a diving duck), and discovery of two lemur species entirely new to science. Sustainability of conservation effort has been assured with development of local capacity for conservation by training 20 Malagasy graduates and post-graduates, and has led to the implementation of cutting edge community-based conservation initiatives to protect habitat critical for endemic species.

The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation works internationally to support ethical and sustainable projects related to preservation of biodiversity and has undertaken numerous bird and animal life preservation projects including:

In the Mediterranean Basin: Bonelli’s Eagle, a Mediterranean bird, is one of the most endangered birds of prey, there being no more than 28 pairs in France. Within the framework of a restoration plan piloted by the League for the Protection of Birds, the Foundation is supporting a program for breeding young eagles in captivity which will be reintroduced in Israel, France and Spain. The monitoring of the released birds will be carried out, from 2009, by telemetric tracking via satellite using an Argos beacon attached to the birds.

In the Polar Region: Polar bear: Pollution and climate change are a major threat to the Arctic and the species living there – this project is focused on the assessment of the state of health of polar bears on a circumpolar scale, based on the combined study of the physiological effects of pollutants and the impact of the destruction of their habitat due to global warming.

In Africa: Niger Giraffes: This project aims to scientifically monitor giraffes, oversee population management, protect the tiger bush (the giraffe’s food supply) and combat poaching; and to resume and implement local development programs for the rural communities in the giraffe region.

About The Peregrine Fund, Inc
The Peregrine Fund is an American conservation organization, founded by Tom J. Cade, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Cornell University, and four other founders, dedicated initially to the restoration of the peregrine falcon across the North American continent with the principal work completed in the United States. The recovery of the peregrine falcon was completed in 1999, when it was removed from the list of endangered and threatened species, and recognized as the greatest conservation biology success story of the Twentieth Century, Peregrine Fund recovered the Mauritius kestrel on the Island of Mauritius; worked to conserve the raptors of Africa in Kenya and South Africa, established field facilities in Central America for work on neo-tropical raptors, and other major conservation projects worldwide. Peregrine Fund is restoring the endangered California condor to Arizona and the endangered Aplomado falcon to Texas and New Mexico. Peregrine Fund’s goal is to maintain healthy raptor populations worldwide, monitor threats to raptors, their prey species and habitats and to educate people to the value of raptors in native ecosystems. www.peregrinefund.org

“We fortified our work on sustainable agriculture, and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and Principality of Monaco initiated a new partnership with us to help farmers in Mali secure a more stable livelihood while protecting the ecosystems where they live, and to advice the national government on a landmark new initiative to scale up the Millennium Villages integrated development strategy to 166 of Mali’s poorest districts, “ said Jennifer Swift -Morgan, the Foundation and Corporate Relations Officer.

“Many of our pioneering collaborations around sustainable development and ending poverty also led to key evidence-based input to the United nations’ Millennium Development Goals summit in September…and partners are enabling us to pilot the latest in information and communications solutions to improve point-of-service health care in ways that will inform health systems throughout Africa and beyond – and leading to the head of ICT in the Millennium Villages being named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2010.”

As a follow up to two recent visits by HSH Prince Albert of Monaco to MIT to address environmental issues and a partnership for energy education, the collaboration from September 23 to 26, between several Monaco entities – including the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation – will include a major energy summit to be held at Monaco’s 100 year-old Oceanographic Museum, featuring guest speakers from MIT and, during the Monaco Yacht Show, an important roundtable discussion on Tomorrow’s Yachts in Clean Seas.

The highlight of these events will be the world premiere, on September 24, at the Monte-Carlo Opera House of Death and the Powers A Robots’ Opera, a groundbreaking operatic and technological experience composed and produced by acclaimed American composer and MIT Professor Tod Machover. This exciting new work – developed at the MIT’s Media Lab with generous sponsorship provided by FUTURUM – uses specially designed new technology including a chorus of robots, a musical chandelier, and a set that “comes alive,” to explore what we leave behind for the world and our loved ones, as told through an eccentric patriarch, Simon Powers, and his family and friends (also visit http://operaofthefuture.wordpress.com/).

The screening was followed by a private reception at the home of Keri Selig and Oceana Board Chair, Keith Addis. Some of Hollywood’s top executives, talent and VIPs had the opportunity to learn more about the ongoing environmental efforts of the Monégasque government and make a donation through a luxury silent and online auction which benefited the US chapter of the Prince’s Foundation.

Guests learned about His Serene Highness Prince Albert’s personal environmental commitment and the international efforts of his eponymous foundation to combat climate change, address water management and desertification issues and the loss of biodiversity. Prince Albert recorded a personalized greeting of welcome and thanks and Ms Maccario addressed the guests.
