The Embassy of the Principality of Monaco held its annual meeting of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the United States and Canada in Washington D.C., with a program combining diplomacy, innovation, and cultural engagement.

Jurisdictions represented (in person and virtually) included New York, Boston, New Orleans, Miami, Atlanta, Seattle, Las Vegas, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Montreal.

The gathering opened on Thursday, March 27, with a welcome dinner at Dogon, one of the top-rated restaurants in the capital. The following morning’s consular session featured updates and presentations from representatives of Monaco’s key philanthropic foundations and strategic partners, including the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation USA, the Princess Grace Foundation-USA, and the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation USA. A special video address by H.S.H. Prince Albert II set the tone for a dynamic series of talks, which also included speakers from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation USA, Astrolab, TV5MONDE, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Throughout the program, participants enjoyed curated cultural and protocol activities, including a private dinner and fireworks viewing at the Watergate Hotel, an exclusive tour of the National Air and Space Museum, and a Capitol reception hosted by former Congressman Jack Fields.

The group also attended “Monaco’s Leap to the Stars” panel and the EARTH to SPACE Festival at the Kennedy Center where the FLEX lunar rover — developed by Astrolab in partnership with Monaco’s Venturi Space — was on display, demonstrating Monaco’s growing role in space innovation.

The 2025 gathering reinforced the strength of Monaco’s diplomatic network in North America while highlighting the Principality’s leadership in environmental, technological, and cultural diplomacy.

April 10, 2024, Fort Lauderdale, FL – A day of water safety and aquatic sport was held in honor of H.S.H. Princess Charlene of Monaco at the City of Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center in Florida. Over 200 children attended the special field trip event to participate in the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation Water Safety Day featuring life safety skills practice and sports demonstrations. The participants for the day’s planned activities are enrolled in the City’s Parks & Recreation programs for children ages 5-17.

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis gave the opening remarks:
‘The City of Fort Lauderdale shares the mission of The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation and its commitment, “to building a world where children from all backgrounds can learn how to swim and practice water safety especially in our community where we have many pools, waterways, lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water around us.”
The City of Fort Lauderdale shares many of the same interests as Monaco – boating, tourism, and swimming! This summer, the 2024 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will be held in Paris, France, a neighbor nation of Monaco – today we’ll learn about aquatic sports and how to stay safe in the water.’

Even though HSH Princess Charlene was not able to attend, She sent a message for the occasion:
‘I am delighted to announce that my esteemed project of Water Safety Day will be soon implemented by My Foundation in the United States, with a particular focus on helping underprivileged children learn to swim.
As an advocate of water safety, I strongly believe that every child should have the opportunity to acquire essential swimming skills, regardless of their backgrounds.
By bringing this initiative to the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation USA, we aim to empower disadvantaged children, providing them with the necessary tools to enjoy water activities safely and confidently. I am thrilled to witness the positive impact this project will have on the lives of countless children, fostering a sense of joy, confidence, and security in and around water.’

H.E. Maguy Maccario-Doyle, Ambassador of Monaco to the U.S. and President of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation USA, also sent a message:
‘I couldn’t be happier that the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center (FLAC) is hosting the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation Water Safety Day for youth and teens from the City of Fort Lauderdale’s PLAY and TRIPs programs on April 10. As the President of the Foundation’s US chapter, I know how vital it is for young people to learn how to swim and how to be safe around water. With the summer swim season fast approaching, it is the ideal time to start learning.
Good luck and happy summer!’

Monaco’s Honorary Consul in Miami, Tomas Abreu, attended the event:
‘I am very happy that I can be here today participating in this special water safety event hosted by the City of Fort Lauderdale and the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation USA. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death, especially among children. That is why water safety and drowning prevention must be a priority for all of us. This is particularly important in South Florida, where we are surrounded by water, and we have the good fortune of being able to participate in outdoor activities all year round.
The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation was created in 2012 and is devoted to water safety and drowning prevention, and to developing the education of children through the values of sport. For 10 years, more than 1,000,000 people have benefitted from the Foundations programs in more than 43 countries. As we enjoy the beauty and recreational opportunities that water
provides, let us never forget the importance of water safety and drowning prevention.’

A perennial favorite on the European choral concert circuit, the Monaco Boys Choir (Les Petits Chanteurs de Monaco) will kick off their East Coast tour with two concerts in New York City on July 6 and 7. The first at the Grotto Church of Notre Dame, organized by the Consulate General of Monaco in New York in partnership with Comité des Associations Françaises et de langue française de New York. The second at St. Bartholomew’s Church, presented by Great Music at St. Bart’s.

After New York City, the choir will visit Washington DC, Savannah, Port St. Lucie and Miami.

This year the Choir is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding by H.S.H. Prince Rainier of Monaco and will pay homage to its founder by performing one of his favorite pieces, Le Campanile de Saint-Nicolas

The Monaco Boys Choir, under the patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, and with the generous support of the Monégasque government, is able to donate its talents to concerts organized on behalf of humanitarian associations throughout the world. This award-winning troupe was founded in 1974 by Prince Rainier III to showcase the Principality’s historic association with culture and the performing arts. It is a part of the Monaco Cathedral Choir and is composed of talented children from ages eight to 18, who, after substantial training, traditionally embark on a spring tour of Europe and a summer tour across the globe. The Choir are especially popular for their repertoire of works for children, and have visited more than 35 nations and perform an average of 30 to 40 concerts a year.

On previous visits to the USA, they have appeared at prestigious venues including Yankee Stadium for a rendition of “God Bless America” at a game opening, at the Kennedy Center, and the Kravis Center in Palm Beach. They have appeared live on NBC’s The Today Show, and on many national networks.

The Government of Monaco has awarded a grant to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., to further research and treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) for children and young adults in Morocco.

Monaco’s Office of International Cooperation and Development, a division that provides support for programs in developing countries, has committed €490,000 (almost $650,000) over the next five years to Morocco’s two pediatric oncology centers—Hôpital d’Enfants in Rabat and Hôpital 20 Août 1953 in Casablanca. Since 2000, St. Jude has worked with these medical facilities through its International Outreach Program (IOP), an initiative to share knowledge, technology and organizational skills worldwide to help increase cure rates of children with cancer.

“The Government of Monaco has been a fervent supporter of St. Jude since 1998 when the Principality hosted the hospital’s first international fundraising gala,” said Maguy Maccario-Doyle, Consul General of Monaco in New York. “Over the years and through many projects, the relationship has flourished, leading to this most recent effort.”

AML is a cancer of the white blood cells, in which cancer cells accumulate in the bone marrow, replacing normal blood cells; the cancer can spread with deadly results to the liver, spleen, skin or central nervous system. At St. Jude, about 70 percent of pediatric patients with AML achieve long-term remissions with chemotherapy treatments or stem cell transplantation. However, in Morocco cure rates are dramatically lower, hovering between 35 to 40 percent. Therapy complications, predominately infections, are often to blame.

“This project will hopefully provide a model that can be replicated to treat and cure other types of cancer in Morocco,” said Raul Ribeiro, M.D., director of the St. Jude IOP, and a member of the St. Jude Oncology department. “Financial support of this nature allows St. Jude to continue sharing knowledge and technology with other countries to improve diagnosis and treatments, ultimately increasing the survival rates of children in Morocco and around the globe.”

The funding from Monaco will help supply chemotherapy and antimicrobial medications to children and young adults undergoing treatment for AML and will create an AML supportive care infrastructure that includes training and mentoring at the hospitals in Rabat and Casablanca.

Avenir (Association des Parents et Amis des Enfants) and Agir (Association Marocaine de Soutien Aux Malades du Sang), the respective foundations for Hôpital d’Enfants and Hôpital 20 Août 1953, will also contribute to the project. Additionally, the Royal Family of Morocco will be involved through H.R.H. Princess Lalla Maryem’s association against cancer.

January 26, 2010 – Monaco — The United Nations (UN) has decreed 2010 as the “International Year of Biodiversity”, with the goal of mobilizing the international community to protect the wealth and fragility of all forms of life that cover the notion of biodiversity.

The Principality of Monaco, the Government of Monaco, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Oceanographic Institute, Albert I Prince of Monaco Foundation, are all proud to announce they will be involved in numerous national and international activities throughout the year, dedicated to biodiversity awareness and preservation as implemented by all United Nations member states.

The Government of Monaco will support lectures and workshops which will take place during the Monacology Fair and on World Environment Day. An information sheet on Mediterranean seaweed for the general public will be produced in partnership with the Oceanographic Museum.

Artificial reefs are to be created in the Principality’s coastal waters in 2010. This new habitat will improve living conditions for the marine life within the Monégasque coast. Compiling inventories of marine and land species will continue – this involves finalizing the mapping of pen shells (Pinna Nobilis) in the Larvotto reserve, monitoring the population as well as continuing the study on the colonization dynamics of the secondary jetty of Port Hercule.

A draft Sovereign Order will be finalized in 2010, in accordance with the Code of the Sea, with the purpose of protecting marine biodiversity. An inventory of avifauna (birds) will be completed – along the same lines as inventories on wild flora (plant life) and entomofauna (insects). The Government of Monaco and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation have signed a partnership agreement with the Parc National du Mercantour and the Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime, which includes awareness activities and an all-taxa biodiversity inventory for the entire territory of the two parks.

A task force managed by the Monaco Scientific Centre (CSM) and the IAEA has been set up to examine the relationship between the state of marine biodiversity and the economy. This is being carried out in the same spirit as the TEEB (the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity) process supported by the European Union and Germany within the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Task Force is currently working on a conference project focused on the economic impact of ocean acidification.

The Government of Monaco has contributed financially towards the production of technical sheets on “Biodiversity in French-speaking Areas” which will be produced by the IEPF (Francophone Institute of Energy and the Environment) with the technical and scientific support of the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature). These sheets will be presented at the next conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nagoya in October 2010.

The Government of Monaco, within the context of its international cooperation policy, couples development with preservation of biodiversity in several projects. The goal is to support economic development that is compatible with the objectives to conserve species and their habitats. Such cooperation takes on the form of aid to NGOs and public authorities for the creation and management of protected areas, specific measures to reduce conflicts between man and nature, the promotion of biological wealth by developing eco-friendly economic activities such as eco-tourism, and improved knowledge of species and their environment (research, management capability).

To this end, projects have been implemented in the Pacific (Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador): management of a large marine area including the Galapagos and the Cocos Islands, in Madagascar (creation and development of protected areas, conservation of endangered species), in Mozambique (skill building for the management of a marine protected area) and in Slovenia (study and protection of biodiversity on various sites). On an international level, the State Services will continue their participation in conferences and meetings for environmental conventions and agreements on biodiversity protection to which the Principality is a party.

Monaco hosted the “International Coral Reef Initiative” (ICRI) meeting (Jan 12-15, 2010) – the International Coral Reef Initiative has been co-presided over by France, Monaco and Samoa since July 1 2009 (and runs until June 30, 2011).

Furthermore, the Monégasque authorities took part in the high-level event organized by UNESCO for the launch of International Biodiversity Year in Paris on January 21-22, 2010.

A key event in March 2010, will be participation by Monaco in the 15th Conference of the Parties to the CITES (Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) which is being held in Doha, Qatar from March 13-25, 2010. The Principality has proposed an amendment to this Convention, with the aim of listing the blue fin tuna in appendix I of CITES, i.e. the prohibition of the international trade of this particularly endangered species.

Finally, among the major meetings in the Principality this year, the 4th Meeting of the ACCOBAMS Contracting Parties (Agreement of the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea, the Mediterranean and the Contiguous Atlantic Area) will take place in Monaco in November 2010.

Because the tropical rainforest is a hotspot for world biodiversity, on January 28, 2010, MC2D and the Prince Albert II Foundation are launching the initiative “Monaco Makes a Commitment Against Deforestation” to promote the use, in Monaco, of wood from sustainably managed forests among companies and public authorities. On the same day, a photographic exhibition entitled “Wealth of the Tropical Rainforest” will take place in the Galerie des Pêcheurs.

MC2D and the Prince Albert II Foundation, with the Government of Monaco, wish to make the Principality of Monaco a model for the use of wood-related products. The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation also supports other forest projects: the education and strengthening of the Kayapo Indians’ culture in the Amazonian Forest, the preservation of the Siberut primary forest in Indonesia, a study with the Global Canopy Program on the economic value of tropical rainforests and the creation of new natural parks in the heart of Amazonian Peru with The Field Museum in Chicago.

Other exhibitions, conferences and round tables on biodiversity will be held throughout 2010 for and by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

The “Monaco Blue Initiative” jointly organized by the Oceanographic Institute, Albert I Prince of Monaco Foundation and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, will be held for the first time as part of the centenary celebrations of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, on March 31 and April 1, 2010. This event will provide an opportunity for thirty or so internationally renowned figures to discuss the preservation of marine species and the protection of the fragile balance that exists between man and the ocean. “The Biodiversity of the Ocean Depths” and “Large Marine Predators: A Cornerstone of the Ecosystems” will be the themes.

On November 18, 2010, following a day of discussions and meetings on Mediterranean biodiversity, the Oceanographic Institute, Albert I Prince of Monaco Foundation, is organizing an exhibition “Let the Mediterranean Live”. This event will place the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, on the occasion of its centenary, at the heart of the movement to preserve the Mediterranean Sea. The exhibition will offer the public the chance to discover the Mediterranean via exceptional images and unusual objects, and will turn the spotlight on current preservation measures and highlight the efforts each of us can make on a daily basis towards preservation and conservation.
