25th Anniversary of September 11: Monaco and New York, A Bond of Solidarity and Friendship
Sept 11, 2026
As New York commemorates the 25th anniversary of September 11, Monaco reflects on the profound ties of solidarity and friendship that were strengthened in the aftermath of the attacks.
From the Consulate General of Monaco, located on Fifth Avenue and 46th Street, the tragic events of September 11, 2001 were witnessed firsthand. In the days and weeks that followed, the Consulate worked closely with New York City officials and helped mobilize Monaco’s response to the tragedy. As funeral processions for fallen firefighters and police officers passed along Fifth Avenue toward St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Consulate also launched a fundraising campaign to support the families of New York’s first responders and emergency personnel, with the support of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III.
On October 23, 2001, H.S.H. Prince Albert, then Hereditary Prince, traveled to New York to present the funds raised to Mayor Rudy Giuliani. The contribution ultimately exceeded $700,000 for the Twin Towers Fund, established to assist the families of first responders who lost their lives in the attacks.
A year later, Monaco’s connection with New York took on an especially personal dimension. In 2002, two Monaco firefighters, Adjudant-Chef Philippe Bosio and Sergent-Chef Jean-Christophe Cotta, traveled to New York for the first anniversary of September 11. It was during that visit that they established a lasting friendship with the Consulate General — one that has continued ever since.
Twenty-four years after that first commemorative visit, the two retired firefighters returned to New York for the 25th anniversary to pay tribute once again to the victims and first responders of September 11. Their return was a moving reminder of the enduring bonds created through shared remembrance and solidarity.
To mark this important anniversary, Monaco Info filmed a special report retracing these moments and highlighting the lasting relationship between Monaco and New York. Through the voices of those who witnessed the aftermath and those who came from Monaco to stand alongside New Yorkers, the report recalls a meaningful chapter in the history of Monaco’s presence in the United States.
Twenty-five years later, Monaco continues to honor the memory of those who lost their lives, pay tribute to the courage of the first responders, and remember the spirit of solidarity that brought Monaco and New York together in the aftermath of September 11.
We will never forget.
